Electricity supply in palm oil milling is self-dependent where the power needed for processing and for the entire mill complex is generated from the waste by-products of the palm fruit produced during operations. Mesocarp fibre from pressed fruit, shells from cracked nuts, and shredded empty fruit bunches are sent to the boiler as fuel. The high-pressure steam generated by the boiler is first used to drive a steam turbine coupled with an alternator to generate electricity for the whole mill, before the steam is further utilised for sterilizing Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) under saturated steam conditions.

Selecting the right turbine is crucial for maintaining the steam and power balance providing sufficient power to operate the mill and adequate steam to properly sterilize the FFB, while minimising the loss of unused steam released into the atmosphere from steam receivers.
